Our fathers

Our fathers all play a huge role in our lives.They might not know how to express their emotions however i believe all fathers in the world love their children.Their silent acts of love is the greatest love of all.Thus we should cherish our fathers and i will acknowledge and say a big thank you to all fathers in the world.You are the greatest.the following video that i will show is a very stirring video of a father trying to complete a marathon with his autistic son.A must watch for everyone.


Here is the story behind it.
Dick hoyts is the father of Rick hoyts.While Rick was still in his mother's womb, the umbilical chord was wrapped around his neck cutting off oxygen to the brain. And when Rick was born, the doctor who was looking after Rick told Dick and his wife that Rick would never be able to walk nor talk all his life that it would be best that they put him away. But the Hoyts would not be willing to do such a thing and decided to bring him home instead and decided likewise to treat him just like anyone normal kid. So that when the family went for a swim, Rick went with them and so on and so forth. Dick saw a benefit marathon for a paralityc child and he wanted to be a part of the benefit marathon. And that started both father and son with their races even while Dick had a heart condition and Rick himself was not well all the time.Despite that both of them managed to complete 212 triathlons, 4 15-hour Inronmans.thus i will like to end of my post with a phrase."I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME".

Never give up

As i browse through youtube, i manage to chance upon this amazing video.It shows a zabra fighting against lion for his dear life.I feel that life in many sense is like this.the lion symbolises the obstacles in life that is inevitable and we are the zebras.We can choose to give up and let the lion devour us or we can fight back and who knows we might succeed.Never lose hope under any situation,unless you are losing hope.Fight for yourself using every drop of blood from your body. Muster every effort within you and fight,sure you will win.

Foreign talents

Yes ok this is a high contested topic with no right or wrong answers.However before you brand me as one of those keyboard warriors i shall ask you a question.Whom does bringing in foreign talents into singapore ultimately benefits.It is the singaporean companies and firms.Yes you can say it will boost our economy.However the real people that suffers from this move are the singaporeans.There is a serious lack of jobs already in singapore and by bringing in this foreign talents is like adding fuel to the fuel for the matter.Yes, you can say as long as you work hard you will get a job.obviously if you read the news the above argument you make will be deemed as a complete fallacy.There are more and more fresh graduates becoming taxi drivers.Of course as a kiasu singaporean i will certainly choose to study abroad and get a job there since the life in singapore is getting dimmer by the day.What i feel that THEY really should do is to bring in more FOREIGN companies that can create jobs for singaporeans like us.PRCs also vie with singaporeans for all the jobs under the sun from a dishwasher to a CEO of a company.What is this?I question the policy.What if feel that the government should do is to only allow foreign talents with high capabilities to join singapore's workforce.That will help minimise(not solve) some of the burdens of my fellow singaporeans and me.


Next i want to talk about foreign talents in sports.I feel that as long as you "employ" foreign people to play games and win medals and in the meanwhile offer them citizenship is not ethical.let me cite the table tennis incident where singhina(oops this is a spelling mistake) won the gold medals with erhem ... three singaporeans from china.I feel that this is like buying success and how will china look at us.By the way they finish as runner-ups.This is so ironic.the singaporean football team has almost half of its players from other countries.I would be more proud of a full singaporean team being the last in the tournament then a half-foreign team(although all of them are given citizenship) being the champions.Do you agree with me?

THE WORLD CUP (for the blinds)

Ok i know that the world cup is the most interesting and hottest topic of the year.However what i am going to talk about now is actually the world cup for blind people.It is actually similar to the fifa world cup 2010 in south africa with a host of nations taking part.However this world cup is unique as it is for the blinds.The rules are similar just that are 4 players on the field are blind and only the goalkeeper has normal vision.As the leader of the team the goalkeeper usually shouts out commands to his team players and the ball "ring with a chyme sound" as it moves and the pitch so that the players can locate it.

My thoughts ont he blind world cup.I feel that we should never give up in life.Look at the players even as they cannot see they still pursue their love and passion for the sports.Using their other senses they manage to play an entertaining game of football.It is already very difficult to walk blindfolded just imagine running with the ball and play soccer when you are blind.I believe that this players must have fallen down uncountable times,however they persevered and achieve their dreams in the end.So we as healthy people should cherish it and as we persevere through the hardships.Now who says soccer can't be played by the blinds?

Touching hearts

Watching the video below may literally bring tears to your eyes.

It shows an armless, self-taught pianist from Beijing, Liu Wei, playing the piano to a stunned, teary-eyed audience in ”China’s Got Talent” reality TV competition.

The 23-year-old wowed audiences and judges alike despite having no arms and using merely his two feet to play the piano.

Liu lost both his arms when he suffered a freak accident at the age of 10 after touching an electrical wire while playing hide and seek. The accident left him in critical condition for 45 days.

Recalling the tragic memory, he said, “I realized that I lost my arms forever and I cried.”

Losing both his arms did not deter him from his ambition of being a great music producer. He started practicing the piano at the age of 19 and admitted that it was tough at first. Although, he suffered from cramps and abrasion, he persevered.

On participating in the talent show, he said, “In my perspective, I have to be successful. My objective to be here is getting Top 3. So my mom could be proud of me.”

His performance left one judge speechless and Liu was asked how he was able to do it.
His response? ”I think there are only two roads that I can choose in my life. One is to give up which would lead to a hopeless death. The other is to live life wonderfully. Nobody says that to play a piano, one can only use his hands.”

On his magical performance of the score, “Mariage D’amour”, one judge commented, “I think including me, and the others here, when we are watching him, when we are listening to his music, we shouldn’t have any complains in our lives.”

If we can take anything out of Liu Wei’s heart-warming, inspiring tale, it’s to stop complaining when life gets us down and, for once, truly appreciate how blessed we sometimes are.

Thus if you have feel that life had been really tough think again.There are so many out there whom have suffered much more than you.Yet they grit their teeths and persevered and succeeded in life.I cannot help but to give liu wei another big round of applause.He had been really very mentally strong.If i were him i would certainly not have the moral courage to get my life back after going through so much things.Those of us who have disabilities and disadvantages have to try harder in life, and believe we can still achieve great things. Nothing is impossible.Heres to the human spirit of determination! 

Policies of maids

Statistics show that maid abuse has been on the rise in recent years.In my post i will talk about the policy of employing maid.Yes the benefits of having a maid are undeniable.They can help parents take care of the children and do the household chores for them.However do you think is it against the the so-called human rights that supposedly everyone now in the 20th century posseses? I feel that there is still a lack of policies that could prevent maid abuse.The maids are "sold" by maid agencies and most of them came to Singapore to work as maid as they were suffering from poverty in their own countries.So in a way you could say that they became maid just because of desperate situations they were under.SO HOW COULD WE SINGAPOREANS EMPLOYERS ILL TREAT THEM? We should consider putting ourselves in their shoes.The main reason why the employers ill treat them is because they have this kind of mentality that they are of a superior social status and that their maids are just like products bought from supermarkets.WE tend to forget that they are humans too.This maids are employed to help do household chores not bought to vent your anger on them by torturing them.I feel that being a maid is more than an occupation, being a maid is like being a family member of the family.I seriously questions the moral upbringings of those maid abusers.Is it just a inevitable flaw of the Singaporean society?Is it because of our greater monetary status that we become arrogant,obnoxious and despicable.I belive money is the root of all evils.I doubt that equality can ever exists in our society.Let me ask you if you can tell me what is the difference between the maids that are victims of abuses and slaves in the 16th century?
However there is still of course a glimmer of hope.I have uncovered a recent article about a maid employee giving her maid her entire fortune worth 6 million dollars.It is not the money that truly counts.It is the sincerity that counts.By leaving her fortune with her maid,it just shows that she posseses the basic moral conscience and treats her like a family member.(http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100721/od_afp/peoplesingaporephilippinessocietyoffbeat_20100721055141)

Thus i feel that we should come up with some policies that can help protect this maids.For example we should increase the punishment of those maid abusers.I know the following suggestion that i give might be a little riduculous for some however ifeel that the best punishment for these maid abusers is to sentence them to give up 20 percent of their wealth or fortune to the maid.These are just some suggestions.Now those let pose a questions to all maid employers.Do you think you have traeted your maid in humane ways?

RAINBOW DEATH

"America did not foresee
Green, pink, purple and other colors death potpourri!

In Rainbow death, the writer takes upon the point of view of one that truly hates and criticises the wars. He starts of the poem with the title "Rainbow death" which shows a hint of irony as rainbow is supposed to be beautiful and magnificent; however in this case it is used as an irony to say that soldiers dying in wars are very honourable and beautiful. However this is not true at all and later on in the poem Hubert mentions about his hatred towards war. He says "America did not foresee" which links us to the fact that some Americans at that time were ignorant about the cruelties of world and how it costs millions of life. I assume that this poem is written to condemn the Vietnam world and Hubert wanted those that had never taken part in a world to learn about the evils of war and the horrors that modern technology can bring, “Execrable effects of agent orange spray”. Another line in the poem" Green, pink, purple and other colours death potpourri" shows that the rainbow symbolises war. This is because people tend to see the bright side of the war, the glory and patriotism. However there are still parts of the rainbow which contains something the people did not see, the death and cruelty of war. Death potpourri means a combination of things that are not in agreement with principles. At last few lines of stanza 2,"astray","pay" and "spray" rhymes very well and have negative meanings of threaten and desperation. I feel that this is a very interesting poem as it makes use of good imagery and help convey the message that war is bad.

Flora and Fuana in Maycomb

Mockingbirds are a group of New World passerine birds from the Mimidae family. They are best known for the habit of some species mimicking the songs of other birds and the sounds of insects and amphibians,often loudly and in rapid succession. There are about 17 species in three genera. These do not appear to form a monophyletic lineage: Mimus and Nesomimus are quite closely related; their closest living relatives appear to be some thrashers, such as the Sage Thrasher. Melanotis is more distinct; it seems to represent a very ancient basal lineage of Mimidae.

Mockingbirds are also knowned for their unique ability to mimic the songs of other songbirds. They are about 11 inches long.They are soft gray with paler breasts, marked with white wing bars and outer tail feathers. White patches under their wings are visible when they fly. They have long, thin beaks and long perky tails.

In Maycomb,there is a wide variety of plants which attracts mockingbirds.Thus,mockingbird exist in Maycomb .

Discrimination and prejudice

Me: Alvin, share your thoughts with me about your point of view on prejudice and discrimination.
Me: What is your understanding of prejudice and discrimination?
Alvin: Prejudice and discrimination are biasness against people from other origins, and this often results in isolating them from the entire community.
Me: Do you think that racism should occur?
Alvin: Of course not, I think that we human beings should not discriminate others as God made us all equal.
Me: So you do not think that we should discriminate others from other races?
Alvin: Yes, I think only insensible and insensitive people discriminate others that are from other races. Come to think of it, I think that those people whom discriminate others (because of their skin colour) are very foolish.
Me: Why do you think racism occurs?
Alvin: I think that racism occurs as people do not understand the culture and traditions of people from other races. This might lead to misunderstandings and discrimination against them.
Me: In the past, there was a law in America that states that the blacks are three fifth of a white. What do you think of that? Is it ethical to pass a law like that?
Alvin: Certainly not. It is absurd to pass such a law. I think that if that law was to be passed out now, there will be riots and strikes all over in America. In the past, most of the blacks were meek to the whites and dare not stand up against them.

My Multiple Intelligences test

Hi everyone,I am back for a new post.Today I am going to talk about my Multiple Intelligences test.First of all,I think that the multiple intelligences test has its pros and cons.The questions in the test will give you a rough guage of what your learning profile is and are simple to answer.However,I think that the results are not very accurate in every aspects.For example,the results are that my kinaesthetics are quite low, but i do love sports and outdoor games.However,the results are quite accurate in terms of the Logical(number smart).I do love math and it is one of my favourite subject.Thus the results are accurate in this case,as it has the highest and largest part of the pie chart.I propose that they should set more questions ,maybe 80 to 100 questions,as 40 questions are just too little to guage one's learning profile.

The Lotteries

Hey!I am back for another post.This time I am going to share about my views on lotteries.I seriously condemn them as I think that they are extremely addictive and the root cause of many troubles.Under the disillusion that they could make quick money and become an overnight millionaire,these gamblers indulged in gambling all day long.They are simply overpowered by greed.Many of them could actually lead normal and carefree lives,however they chose to gamble hoping to strike rich with a stroke of luck.However that stroke of luck never seems to appear.Once these gamblers fail to win the first time,they just dismissed it ,saying that they were just unlucky.They then gamble again trying to recope their losses.They would be unknowingly entering this spiral,circle that would trap them forever.As for my parents views,they are drastically different.My mother often said that these gambles would ruin families and drive one to his wit's end.I had to agree with her.once the gambler loses money he would borrow money from loan sharks this is when all the problems arises.Families,careers would all be lost.On the other hand,my father said that,"you never try,you never know"
Yes,I agree that a small gamble on lotteries once a blue moon is acceptable,but over indulging it will prove to be drastic and costly.I feel that newspapers should not publish news of people striking rich from 4-d.This would influenced more people to gamble.Governments should be applauded for creating hotlines to help counsel addictive gambles.However,they should not creat casinos as it would then be very contradicting.Finally,I would like to advise everyone not to gamble, aas you would be paying it with your life.Learn to treasure life.

My favourite Poet

Hey!I am back for another post.Today I am going to share about my favourite
poet.I need to admit that I don't really read about poems, prefering storybooks
instead.However there is a poet whose peoms are as interesting and meaningful as
a storybook.Not only that, he also composes songs too.He is none other than
EDGAR ALLEN POE.
His background:He was born in Boston, January 19, 1809, and after a tempestuous life of forty
years, he died in the city of Baltimore, October 7, 1849.
His father, the son of a distinguished officer in the Revolutionary army, was
educated for the law, but having married the beautiful English actress, Elizabeth
Arnold, he abandoned law, and in company with his wife, led a wandering life on
the stage. The two died within a short time of each other, leaving three children
entirely destitute. Edgar, the second son, a bright, beautiful boy, was adopted
by John Allen, a wealthy citizen of Richmond. Allen, having no children of his
own, became very much attached to Edgar, and used his wealth freely in
educating the boy. At the age of seven he was sent to school at Stoke
Newington, near London, where he remained for six years. During the next three
years he studied under private tutors, at the residence of the Allen's in
Richmond. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia, where he remained less
than a year.
After a year or two of fruitless life at home, a cadetship was obtained for him
at West Point. He was soon tried by court-martial and expelled from school
because he drank to excess and neglected his studies. Thus ended his school
days.
In 1829 he published "Al Aaraaf, and Minor Poems." "This work," says his
biographer, Mr. Stoddard, "was not a remarkable production for a young
gentleman of twenty." Poe himself was ashamed of the volume.
After his stormy school life, he returned to Richmond, where he was kindly
received by Mr. Allen. Poe's conduct was such that Mr. Allen was obliged to
turn him out of doors, and, dying soon after, he made no mention of Poe in his
will.
Now wholly thrown upon his own resources, he took up literature as a profession,
but in this he failed to gain a living. He enlisted as a private soldier, but was
soon recognized as the West Point cadet and a discharge procured.
In 1833 Poe won two prizes of $100 each for a tale in prose, and for a poem.
John P. Kennedy, one of the committee who made the award, now gave him
means of support, and secured employment for him as editor of the "Southern
Literary Messenger" at Richmond. After a short but successful editorial work on
"The Messenger," his old habits returned, he quarreled with his publishers and
was dismissed. While in Richmond he married his cousin, Virginia Clem, and in
January, 1837, removed to New York. Here he gained a poor support by writing
for periodicals.
His literary work may be summed up as follows: In 1838 appeared a fiction
entitled "The Narrative of Arthur Gorden Pym;" 1839, editor of Burton's
"Gentleman's Magazine," Philadelphia; next, editor of "Graham's Magazine;"
1840, "Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque," in two volumes; 1845, "The
Raven," published by the "American Review;" then sub-editor of the "Mirror"
under employment of N. P. Willis and Geo. P. Norris; next associate editor of
the "Broadway Journal."
His wife died in 1848. His poverty was now such that the press made appeals to
the public for his support.
In 1848 he published "Eureka, a Prose Poem."
He went to Richmond in 1849, where he was engaged to a lady of considerable
fortune. In October he started for New York to arrange for the wedding, but
at Baltimore he met some of his former boon companions, and spent the night in
drinking. In the morning he was found in a state of delirium, and died in a few
hours.
The most remarkable of his tales are "The Gold Bug," "The Fall of the House of
Usher," "The Murders of the Rue Morgue," "The Purloined Letter," "A Descent
into Maelstrom," and "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar." "The Raven" and
"The Bells" alone would make the name of Poe immortal. The teachers of
Baltimore placed a monument over his grave in 1875.
Poe has been severely censured by many writers for his wild and stormy life, but
we notice that Ingram and some other prominent authors claim that he has been
willfully slandered and that many of the charges brought against him are not
true. His ungovernable temper and high spirit led him into disputes with his
friends, hence he was not enabled to hold any one position for a great length of
time. Like Byron and Burns, he had faults in personal life, but his ungovernable
passions are sleeping, while the sad strains of "The Raven," the clear and
harmonious tones of "The Bells," and the powerful images of his fancy live in the
immortal literature of his time.

Why I like the peom

The reasons why I like this peom is because it is interesting.The author knows how to make use of figurative language to its fullest extent creatively and intelligently.The entire story revolves around a knight who is determined to save his lady at all cost but in the end he lost the battle and left his horse dead at foot of castle wall.The whole peom has a quick pace and good rythem and I enjoyed reading it.

Figurative Language

The poem I have chosen is Fast rode the knight by Stephen Crane.It is "Fast rode the knight
With spurs, hot and reeking,Ever waving an eager sword,"To save my lady!"Fast rode the knIght,And leaped from saddle to war.Men of steel flickered and gleamedLike riot of silver lights,And the gold of the knight's good bannerStill waved on a castle wall.. . . . .A horse,Blowing, staggering, bloody thing,Forgotten at foot of castle wall.A horseDead at foot of castle wall."

Firstly,the phrase "And leaped from saddle to war" is a hyperbole as it is exaggerated and used by the author to bring about an element of excitement.As for simile,the author uses the phrase "Like riot of silver lights" to represent the men of steel flickering and gleamering.The phrase "Blowing, staggering, bloody thing" is used for personification as it adds human traits to the poem to describe the horse making it more realistic as the phrase are usually used to describe humans. "Ever waving an eager sword" is a metaphor as waving a sword and preparing for battle should bring fear and dread not eagerness. "Forgotten at foot of castle wall" is a symbolism representing a lost battle.The author used figurative language as he wanted to compare the scenarios in the peom with things to make it more creative and realistic.

First semester being a secondary one student

I enjoyed the school life here in hwa chong.Although I had to cope with my homework,to complete them on time and the tests that never seemed to end, I still managed to find joy by making new friends. I loved playing soccer with them every recess.About my msg,4.33,I feel that I had to put in extra effort to improve and had to buckle up to make the cut.I sensed a serious need to pull up my socks,if not I might be "relegated"out of the top three percent of the nation.One main reason I did not get a good grade for LA,C6,is because I did not understand the literature part that well,"PEE"structure and stuff like that.On how to improve my grades,I planned to do more practices and pay closer attention in class.I would also have the habit of reading 30 minutes of storybook everyday to increase my vocabulary word bank.An ideal msg for term three would be from 2.5 to 3.

Martin Luther King,Jr had famously gave a public speech which is known to many as " I have a dream". He spoke of his desire for a future where black and white, among others, would coexist harmoniously as equals. King's delivery of the speech on August 28, 1963, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, was a defining moment of the American Civil Rights Movement,in relation to human rights issues. Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters, the speech is often considered to be one of the greatest and most notable speeches in history and was ranked the top American speech of the 20th century by a 1999 poll of scholars of public address.After listening to his speech, I thought that what he said was indeed very true and meaningful and I feel that something should be done to ensure that both the blacks and the whites should be treated the same,equally.

Martin Luther King,Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States and he is frequently referenced as a human rights icon today. King is recognized as a Saint in many Christian Churches.A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president.King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective.King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986.
I admire him for his courage and charisma.He has the courage the speak out his thoughts about the mistreatment of the black community at that time.It was him who freed the blacks from the yoke of segregation, whites may owe him the greatest debt, for liberating them from the burden of America's centuries-old hypocrisy about race.He also possesses the charisma and the ability to give rousing speeches that drive millions of people to come forward and follow his footsteps to fight against racism.
However, one of his minus points was his inability to control the rash actions of his supporters as shown on the "Bloody Sunday" , March 7 1965. It was a major turning point in the effort to gain public support for the Civil Rights Movement, the clearest demonstration up to that time of the dramatic potential of King's nonviolence strategy. King, however, was not present. We learnt about the ugly nature of men in the story"The Lottery".The two undesirable characteristics displayed in the story were the selfishness ,ruthlessnessand supertition in men.In the story,the lottery is performed to pick out a "winner" to be stoned be stoned at in the belief of a better harvest.I think that picking out someone to be stoned at for a better harvest is indeed very selfish and cruel, furthermore,the belief is based on the supertition of men ,which may not be true.It is very relevant to our society as the supertition of men could be reflected in the society.One example is,people praying to all sorts of god for 4D numbers on the belief that god would without a doubt answer their prayers and turn them into overnight millionaires.Another example,is a popular Chinese supertition, that is staying on the 4th storey would bring bad luck as the number 4 in Cantonese is "sei" which sounds like the word "death".Some people also do not like the number 13 as they think that it brings bad luck.As for selfishness,it could be easily be seen in the MRT.Once an elderly enters the MRT train,very few people if not none,would give up the seat to them.This is the selfishness of man.
